Schipperkes - Temperament

None of Belgian races have soft characters, and Schipperkes are probably the most energetic dogs of all. In spite of its small size this dog can be a perfect guardian. Although its jaws are too weak, it barks furiously at the smallest sign of danger. That's why it should be taught not to bark for a long period.

Being very smart, Schipperke will never attack without reason and will quickly understand your demands. Schipperkes master their skills quicker than any other dogs. They can be taught to ring a bell when a visitor comes or to keep absolute silence when you are sleeping.

All Schipperkes are bound to the master and his family and feel uncomfortable when they are gone. The Schipperke is not everyone's friend: the strangers are treated with indifference or suspicion. The dogs of this breed are very good with small children and are ideal friends for older kids, but hate to be treated without respect.

As for other dogs Schipperkes are friendly as long as it's mutual and are not intimidated by larger dogs. Be careful: this breed is dangerous for home rats, mice, weasels, etc.

Schipperkes are not the dogs for everyone. They need an equally active master with which to walk and play. Sitting around is unhealthy for them. Possessing great endurance, Schipperkes can run, jump and swim for hours.
