Fortunately, Schipperkes have not reached the high level of popularity, so the incidence of over breeding is low for them. It's a very healthy breed. Only one genetic disease has been found - MPS IIIB. Breeders try to eliminate the problem through DNA testing and responsible breeding practices. (Carriers should be bred only to normal or not breed at all.) Some rare diseases are possible: epilepsy, thyroid deficiency and Legge-Perthes.
Not all Schipperkes are of breeding quality, so spaying and neutering eliminates reproductive diseases. Also it will eliminate behavior problems at the teenage stage (10-18 months). Males who were used as stud dogs are not good as house pets because they mark territory.
Schipperkes - Choosing a Reputable Breeder
It's very important to distinguish a responsible breeder from a moneymaker when buying a Schipperke. A reputable breeder always:
Keeps accurate and complete breeding records;
Approves the bred according to the standards;
Screens all breeding stock for hereditary faults and removes questionable dogs from the breeding program;
Asks the buyer a lot of questions about his temperament, habits and living conditions to see if it's the right person for the dog.
A reputable breeder never:
Breeds puppies only for money and tries to get rid of them;
Knowingly sell puppies and adult Schipperkes to wholesalers, laboratories or pet shops.
